DJ Mahf

Highly influenced by my mom and older brother Jim, I grew up listening to funk, jazz, rock, and hip hop. The art of turntablism really fascinated me and I can remember when I was younger I would try to bust out some scratches on an old record player in the house. It definitely sounded like shit and I know I ruined some valuable grooves. Hip-hop culture always interested me and having my brother Jim to guide me in learning the elements had a huge impact. So, I decided a few years ago to do something with my love of music and not just be a listener.

I like to incorporate a little bit of everything in my sets: hip hop, funk, jazz, rock, reggae… it’s all there. I like to mix things together that really shouldn’t work, but they do with the proper adjustments. Hip hop is the backbone of my style, and I like to keep the possibilities open to what blends together.

I am part of a hard rock/funk band called Essence of Logic, and we have been staying steadily busy for the past few years. We have played just about everywhere in St.Louis and have received steady airplay on 101.1 The River, 105.7 The Point, and many other college level stations in the Midwest. Our debut album “What’s the Story??” was released in October of 2004 and is being distributed in stores by Blue Sky Media.

A while back I met one of my musical brothers, DJ-Helias from local crew Lojic. Since, we have played a variety of shows and made a handful of random recordings together. This year I hooked up with J-Toth and laid down some work on 3 tracks for his upcoming “Lovecycle” album. Besides studio work, I have performed live with the FFS and have plans to do many other projects and shows with the crew. I am hard at work working on my production and beat-making skills… hopefully a solo album in the future. My next project is working as a member of the new hip-hop crew the Earthworms and spinning at various events… Keep your nose clean, open your ears and your eyes.
